Venue & Experience

Located at the foot of Mont Canigou, in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees, the Academy takes place in a setting shaped by nature, history, and a long tradition of retreat and learning.

Vernet-les-Bains & Mont Canigou

Situated in the heart of the Conflent region, Vernet-les-Bains is a small mountain town shaped by history, thermal traditions, and a close relationship with its surrounding landscape. Recognised as both a spa town and a “Station Verte”, it has long been associated with rest, health, and a slower rhythm of life.

The village combines a medieval core — with its castle, church, and narrow streets — and later Belle Époque developments along the banks of the Cady river, reflecting a period when Vernet-les-Bains was known as the “Paradise of the Pyrenees” and attracted artists, thinkers, and visitors from across Europe.

Overlooking the village stands Mont Canigou, a mountain of strong cultural and symbolic significance in the region. More than a landscape feature, it has long been regarded as a place of orientation, ascent, and reflection, shaping both the physical and cultural identity of the surrounding territory.

The Academy Venue & Facilities

The courses take place in a dedicated conference and accommodation venue, designed to support both focused study and rest. Participants stay on site throughout the week, sharing meals and daily rhythms in a contained and supportive environment.

The setting encourages simplicity and presence, allowing attention to remain on the learning process while being held by the surrounding landscape and the quiet continuity of the place.

Daily Life & Course Experience

All courses follow a one-week format, designed to create continuity and focus. Participants are invited to arrive on Sunday afternoon, with a shared welcome dinner in the evening, allowing time to settle into the place and the group.

From Monday to Friday, days unfold around the course activities and shared meals. The rhythm balances structured sessions with moments of rest, reflection, and informal exchange. Participants are invited to take part in simple aspects of daily life, such as basic meal clean-up, contributing to a sense of shared responsibility and community.

Departure is normally on Saturday morning. For those who wish to remain in the area, it is possible to extend the stay informally into the weekend, enjoying the surrounding region at a slower pace.

Fees Overview & Accessibility

The Academy follows a transparent and carefully structured fee model, designed to support both the quality of the courses and the sustainability of the venue and teaching team.

An early registration rate is offered in order to allow careful planning of accommodation, meals, and logistics. Standard fees apply after this period. In addition, a limited number of tuition reductions may be available by request, in exchange for light daily assistance with shared tasks during the week.

Full and up-to-date details regarding fees, accommodation options, and conditions are provided on the registration page for each course.

Cultural & Historical Surroundings

The region surrounding Vernet-les-Bains is shaped by a long and layered history, in which landscape, memory, and cultural transmission are closely intertwined. Certain sites within this territory — among them the mountain of Montségur — have long been perceived as places of particular intensity, where geography, history, and human experience converge.

Beyond its role in medieval history, Montségur has often been approached as a site with a distinctive energetic and spiritual character, a perception rooted less in doctrine than in direct experience of place. In this sense, the lands historically associated with the Cathars form part of a broader context of inquiry, transmission, and resistance that has left a lasting imprint on the region.

Alongside the Cathar presence, the region is also connected to older pilgrimage routes and symbolic narratives that circulated throughout medieval Europe. Among these, traditions associated with the Grail and with Mary Magdalene occupy a particular place, not as doctrines, but as symbolic frameworks through which questions of lineage, transmission, and the feminine dimension of spiritual knowledge were explored.

These narratives are part of the cultural memory of the territory, shaping how certain places were approached, inhabited, and preserved over time.

Monastic sites such as the Abbey of Saint-Martin-du-Canigou belong to this same continuum. Embedded in the landscape, these places reflect long traditions of silence, rhythm, and continuity, articulated through architecture rather than discourse.

Seen from within, their spaces establish a measured relationship between interior life and the surrounding world. They are not presented as destinations with prescribed meanings, but as environments shaped over centuries to support study, attention, and sustained presence. For those who wish to explore the region further, they offer a quiet counterpoint to the intensity of collective learning.
