What does changing “lead” to “gold” mean in the Egyptian alchemical tradition (as imported into the western mystery tradition before the fall of the library of Alexandria)? According to both French and American scholars, it meant “becoming gold” yourself, to use the language of Dr. Shannon Grimes in her book by the same name. The oldest surviving Egyptian alchemical text, written in ancient Greek, are preserved as Codex Marcianus graecus 299, and were hand-copied (in Greek) by John Dee in the 1560s. They were important enough to Dee that he took them along on his continental Enochian adventures with Edward Kelly in the 1580s. He never listed them in his book catalog, likely because he considered them too important or too heretical…. And/or too psychedelic! Much of the Codex Marcianus graecus 299 are recopyings of Egyptian alchemy from before the burning of the library of Alexandria. They become a major influence upon John Dee’s Monas Hieroglyphica, where Dee synthesizes the ideas with Pythagoreanism and Christian Kabbalah. According to PD Newman in his book _Angels in Vermillion_, these ideas become intrinsically linked to the quest for the philosopher’s stone. They’re also just a lot of fun to read about. The oldest, “Isis the Prophetess to her Son Horus,” seems to be set at a key moment in western mythology: the moment where Isis has just reincarnated her slain husband Osiris into her son Horus. Essentially, the less-psychedelic Turba is often what (Alchemist ) Dee seems to be alluding to in the Monas Hieroglyphica, though the references make much more sense if viewed as allusions to the Codex.
